HARVESTING CHANGE: TIONGE LESTEN’S JOURNEY TO TRANSFORMATION
Tionge Lesten, a wife and mother of three from Traditional Authority Mwadzama in Nkhotakota, has completely transformed her family’s livelihood through agriculture. Today, she stands as a proud example of success in her community, but her journey to food security and financial independence required a complete shift in how she farmed.
Before adopting the sustainable agricultural practices promoted by SAFI, Tionge and her family struggled to get meaningful returns from their hard work. Despite cultivating a 2-acre piece of land, their yields were discouragingly low, traditionally bringing in a mere 50 pails of groundnuts, a harvest that left very little room for economic growth.
Everything changed when Tionge embraced SAFI’s modern farming methods. Investing in her future, she planted 8 pails of groundnuts on that exact same 2-acre plot. The results of implementing these improved practices were immediate and staggering. This season, the very same land that once yielded only 50 pails produced an incredible 250 pails of groundnuts, marking a massive turning point for her household.
This bumper harvest has opened up exciting new doors for Tionge’s family. They have already sold 50 pails to secure immediate financial needs, leaving them with 200 pails remaining. With the proceeds from the remaining stock, the family plans to buy a motorbike to ease their everyday mobility and invest the rest as capital to start a business.
Driven by this remarkable turnaround, Tionge is already expanding her vision for the future. She plans to extend her cultivation space this year to farm 4 acres of land, aiming to double her productivity and maximize her yields for the upcoming season. On another half-acre of land, she grew Orange Fleshed Sweet Potatoes and harvested two oxcarts. By selling the sweet potato vines for K240,000, she was able to use the proceeds to buy two goats.
All of this transformation is a powerful testament to how equipping farmers with the right agricultural knowledge can permanently lift a family out of survival mode and into true economic independence.
