Empowering households in Malawi with skills for sustainable food security
From emergency response to long-term solutions, SAFI works with communities to build resilience and self-reliance.
About SAFI
Founded in response to Malawi’s 2002 famine, SAFI works to build long-term solutions to food insecurity.
SAFI began in 2002 as a community-based organization established to coordinate food relief assistance in response to the severe famine that affected Malawi. Over time, the founders recognized that food aid alone was not a sustainable solution to food insecurity. As a result, SAFI shifted its focus towards capacitating households with practical skills to produce sufficient food for themselves. SAFI was formally established in 2007 and started its operations with an initial cohort of 30 families. Today, SAFI has trained over 300 families at its campus in Madisi, Dowa District.
