From Soya Beans to Self-Reliance
Stephano Pakhomo, a follower farmer from Salima under Traditional Authority Nkhombedza, began his season working alongside lead farmer Mr. Tiuzeni. Starting with 5 kilograms of soya bean seed from SAFI, Stephano saw the potential for greater returns and invested in an additional 30 kilograms, planting a total of 35 kilograms across 2.5 acres. His commitment, combined with the adoption of good agricultural practices learned through SAFI trainings, set the stage for an exceptional harvest.
By the end of the season, Stephano reaped 30 bags of soya beans, a yield that validated his decision to expand his planting and demonstrated the effectiveness of his farming methods. Selling his harvest earned him 2,180,000 Malawian Kwacha, a substantial income that transformed his financial position. With these earnings, he purchased a motorcycle, not only to meet his personal transport needs but also to launch a small transport business. This new venture is set to generate regular income, enabling him to provide for his family while also securing packed maize seed and fertilizer for the coming season.
