THE SUCCESS STORY OF HANNOCK BANDA: FROM STUDENT TO COMMUNITY LEADER
Hannock Banda, a dedicated husband and father of one from Kapangalika Village under Traditional Authority Chiwawula in Lilongwe, is a shining example of how agricultural education can transform a life. Between 2024 and 2025, Hannock attended the SAFI Campus training, where he was assigned a two-acre plot to practice his farming skills. His hard work at the campus paid off significantly, resulting in a harvest of 39 bags of maize, 8 bags of soya beans, and 16 buckets of groundnuts.
Upon returning home, Hannock immediately began turning his vision into reality. By selling 12 bags of his maize harvest, he secured K600,000, which allowed him to rebuild his family house and construct a sturdy khola for his livestock. He also invested in an exemplary backyard garden, purchasing seeds for high-value crops like tomatoes, eggplants, green peppers, and onions. To further his growth, he managed to rent an additional acre of land to expand his farming operations for the current season.
Beyond his personal achievements, Hannock has become a true leader in his community. He has already trained more than 10 follower farmers, sharing the knowledge he gained at SAFI to help others improve their yields. To empower these families, he provided each with two chickens and established a “pass-on” program. This initiative ensures that as the livestock multiplies, the benefits will continue to reach more families throughout the village. The rapid shift in Hannock’s life is a testament to the power of the one-year program at SAFI Campus. In just a short time, he has moved from a student to a successful farmer and community mentor. His journey proves that with the right training and dedication, it is possible to transform a household and bring lasting purpose and prosperity to an entire community.
